PRINCESA
This Italian film traces the odyssey of teenage transsexual Fernanda as she journeys from her native Brazil to Milan’s trans sex worker scene. Unlike most of her fellow prostitutes, Fernanda’s most cherished desire is to have a sex-change operation, fall in love with a man, and live the “normal” life of Italian womanhood. When a new client approaches her one night, it seems that her dreams will come true. However, as Fernanda makes the transition from streetwalker to housewife, she discovers that she may be leaving something precious behind after all. The film offers an honest and understanding portrayal of the transsexual prostitutes, while also humanizing the numerous Italian men who come to them as clients. From the carnival-like Milan street market of the sex workers to Fernanda’s placid and ordered life as a homemaker, PRINCESA avoids judgement and instead honours how complex characters come to better know their own identities through one another. And in the end, maybe we can explore the sources and meaning of our own pride as Fernanda accepts and celebrates herself and her choices. Beautiful pride!
