Work Study Position: ‘Community Cupboard’ Facilitator and Researcher

Position Description: The Centre for Women & Trans People at U of T helps to fulfill some of the growing demands for food security on campus; one way in which we do this is through The Spice, a cooking and food sharing program on Thursdays. The position will work closely with The Spice’s Outreach Facilitator to address issues around food security, poverty, and nutritious and affordable food. The Community Cupboard was added to help alleviate stress for people without enough food to feed themselves or their families. The Community Cupboard Facilitator will be responsible for developing and maintaining this component of the Women’s Centre food security programming. The tasks of the Community Cupboard Facilitator include, but are not limited to:

• Order and coordinate the Good Food Box

• Work closely with The Spice’s Outreach Facilitator to document and research with other groups on campus who are doing work around poverty, food nutrition and accessibility

• Ensure that the cupboard is well stocked with as much variety as possible by picking up non-perishables food from the Food Bank

• Act as the liaison between the Centre and the U of T Food Bank, and attend Food Bank Steering Committee meetings

• Network with other groups on campus

• Coordinate workshops on food security

• Publicize the Community Cupboard to the University of Toronto by using mainstream and alternative media, making and distributing flyers and posters

• Evaluate how the service can be improved

The individual will have the opportunity to work both independently and in a team in a collective environment with the support and supervision of staff and Collective members. They will gain experience in program delivery, organization, evaluation, interpersonal skills, communication and community development skills. A deeper understanding of issues around poverty, access and food security will also be acquired.
