Work Study Position: Aboriginal Women & Women of Colour Programming Facilitator

Position Description: The Centre for Women & Trans People is mandated to advocate for and provide resources for all women & trans people on campus. This position was developed to assist The Centre to better understand how to address the needs of diverse women and trans people in accessing The Centre and the larger University through the facilitation of Aboriginal Women and Women of Colour Programming.

The focus will be on developing appropriate programs and support networks, and supporting/working with The Centre’s Aboriginal Women & Women of Colour group. The tasks of the Aboriginal Women & Women of Colour Programming Facilitator include, but are not limited to:

• Outreach to Aboriginal Women and Women of Colour on campus and in the larger community

• Network with other equity groups on campus and in the community

• Work with the Collective, staff and volunteers to develop programming to meet the needs of Aboriginal Women and Women of Colour at The Centre

• Publicize the Aboriginal Women and Women of Colour Programming to the University of Toronto and the wider community by using mainstream and alternative media, making and distributing flyers and posters, and using other appropriate strategies

• Support and assist with The Centre’s Aboriginal Women & Women of Colour Group; help with outreach for the group

The individual will have the opportunity to work independently in a collective environment with the support and supervision of staff and Collective members. They will gain experience in the areas of research, network building, facilitation, leadership, communication, community-building and analysis. They will also acquire increased knowledge of issues facing Aboriginal Women and Women of Colour.

All resumes must be accompanied by a one-page personal statement on “Community organizing and working through oppression and privilege.” This statement is intended to give the Hiring Committee a bit of an idea of your understanding of community organizing, the work you’ve done and how you understand yourself in that work.

We especially encourage people who are surviving racism, colonization, poverty, transphobia, homophobia, ableism, and sexism to apply for paid positions, as well as to volunteer in action groups and to join the Centre’s Collective.
